Casa de Amparo
For the Power of One project, we partnered with Casa de Amparo, an organization in San Marcos which is recognized as a major force in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect around San Diego County. They provide support for these children and young parents through programs such as counseling, parent networking, residential and/or transitional services, and family visitation.
As a group, we met with the organization to see what need we could fulfill for them. In the end we decided to build a renewed ‘store’. At Casa de Amparo, kids get rewarded with Casa Bucks (which is similar to monopoly money) for good behavior and with it, they can buy small items such as headphones, socks, makeup, or any other small item. However, the problem with the shelf was that it was small and narrow and every time someone wanted to buy something, they had to open the whole shelf and expose all of the items. Along with that, kids would not be able to see what was in there until they took out the boxes and dig around. So we decided to create a whole new shelf. One that was larger and wider and had a clear cover so they could see the items before they decide to spend it. Along with the shelf, we fundraised to be able to buy items to add into the shelf. That way, they had more stock and variety.
While working on this project as a group we learned about the work Casa De Amparo does. We also learned about domestic violence and the effect it has on children. We learned that a child doesn’t choose to be a witness or a victim of domestic violence. As a society we can help those suffering. Even if it’s one life, we are changing that person’s world. No matter if it’s a big gesture or a small gesture, you can make a huge change in that person’s life.
