After reading The Martian, students were inspired to write their own flash fiction on an adventure to a planet or moon in our universe. Students had to research life on their planet and calculate the fuel to reach the planet from Earth. The story on how they colonized the planet was open-ended and allowed them to express their creativity.
I started by researching one of Jupiter's moon named Callisto. It is theorized that there is an underwater ocean which may show signs of life. However, the temperatures are extremely cold which makes it hard to sustain life. Regardless, it was neat to be able to research a planet of our own and create an outrageous story that allowed us to expressed our imagination. Space travel is complex but this project made it easier to be able to grasp such an elaborate idea into something we could enjoy.
