As a club, we also outreached to help the community we live in. Together, the girls went to do a cleanup. We got all of our cleaning supplies (gloves and bags) and headed off to clean out the trails. We however, departed from the trail and really went deep into the nature. We cleaned behind bushes, around the dam, near a sewage, up some hills, and just places that were hidden. We were full of scratches and branches but we collected A LOT of trash. We had pipes, and rotting cans, and a bunch of balls. When we returned, the organizers were surprised on how much trash we collected. We really did push ourselves to do a good cleanup.

On the 7th of November, the Consulado Mobile was coming to station itself at HTHNC. Many people (especially Latinos) were coming over to get their ID, passport, etc. renewed from early in the morning to around 3. We found this as an opportunity to fundraise for the Latinas Unidas club. So we sold tacos for $1.50. We got SO many customers because who doesn't love tacos? We were there to setup at 8:00 AM and left after cleaning up at around 4:00 PM. It was quite tiring. I was responsible for charging, while others handled the food (I was dead sick that day). In the end we ended up fundraising over $900. All our hard work definitely paid off.
This event was held by the group of Latino parents from HTHNC, called Padres Unidos, at school as a fundraiser for HTeNC, HTMNC, and HTHNC. In a way, this fundraiser proved to show that no matter one's ethnicity level, one could always help out if they set the time to it. (Where there is a will, there is a way.)There were many booths set around from Mexican food to face painting to small games. As the title suggests, the event was Mexican themed. All volunteers were dressed with colors representing Mexico and for the most part, where Spanish-speakers. I helped run the bouncy house. I supervised kids and maintained a cycle to give everyone a fair chance to play. I was at that station for all 4 hours. This event was highly successful and attracted people of all ages and races. It was a fun environment and an awesome way to help our school's community. |
This year, I have been actively participating in events supported by the Latinas Unidas at HTHNC as president of the club. To the left are only some events, a total of 15 hours in volunteering. We have already started planning many more for the 2nd semester such as outreaching to Border Angels to continue in making a difference in our community!
